The Initial Consultation will take 45 minutes. There are 5 steps involved in the Initial Consultation: Paperwork, History, Physical Examination, Report of Findings and Treatment.
Self explanatory (Don’t forget your glasses if needed).
Q&A Where is the pain? How long has the pain been present? Have you had the pain before? What type of pain is it? Was there an incident or accident or did the pain occur for seemingly no reason? Do you have any other health concerns? Are you taking medication? Have you had any previous treatment?
And there maybe more questions depending on the individual. Don’t worry if you can’t answer or forget some details. James the Chiro is trained and experienced at gathering information and piecing the puzzle together!
After creating a list of possible causes for the pain in the History, the Physical Examination will then confirm the Working Diagnosis (What is causing the pain). The testing in the Physical Examination is quick and easy and grounded in ‘Evidence Based’ techniques. What this means is the results must be able to be measured by the Chiro and by the patient!
Example: If it is painful to twist to the left then this will help to determine what is wrong but will also be a way to measure progress. After treatment the same test (twisting to the left) can be repeated and the amount of improvement measured. This measurement is the basis of Evidence Based Treatment and is very important so that both the Chiro and the patient can see the results.
After the Physical Examination James will then provide his Report of Findings.
Here all the questions are answered and the patient is completely informed of the following: What is wrong? What can be done about it? How long does it take to fix? What does the treatment involve? What are the alternatives? What are the risks involved with treatment?
And then if all the patient’s questions have been answered and the patient is satisfied that everything has been explained completely then they will be asked to sign and give their Informed Consent to continue to the treatment phase.
Treatment comprises of a combination of Joint Mobilisation, Myofascial Release Techniques, Stretching and Proprioceptive Xxercises. All treatments will vary depending on the individual.
On most occasions the treatment will commence at the Initial Consultation. If there are indicators not to treat, the reasons will be explained and a referral for imaging (X-rays etc) or a referral to another health professional will be provided. If a Radiological Examination is required there is no charge for X-rays.
